Saw butterfly from 3/8block Shape with Foredom coarse bit, finish with the drum sander first 80 grit and then 220. detail the body and wings edges with diamond bit, and then resand with 220 sandpaper
Insert the feelers and glue a clasp on the back. Seal with tk sealer,
First coat is a mixture of Cadium Yellow and white.
Pencil in the veins, and then paint them, be careful to follow reference closely. This detail will make or break your painting, as the markings follow the veins.  Use a mixture of black and burnt umber
Paint the edges and markings with the black mix.
Use a rapidiograph pen or a number 2 brush to put in the fine dots along the veins and edges of the black. Again, check the reference closely.
Next put in the markings, two or three coats are required on the yellow so they wont be muddied by the underlying black colour. Paint the red and blue markings yellow first, then paint the blue and red over the yellow, this will give you a  clear colour.
Use a little Raw Sienna and water in the markings between the veins. Put a few dots on the feelers, and seal the entire butterfly with a clear acrylic sealer.

This represents the Male Tiger Swallowtail Butterfly.
