| CARVING DEMONSTRATION BY, HUGH PARKS, | Leave your block of wood about 2 inches long, so you can
hold onto it while bandsawing it to shape. Cut along the top pattern first,
don't cut across the end of the tail. Next cut the side view out , cut
across the end of the tail now and your cut will be free.

TOOLS
REQUIRED
Hand Saw, Dremel tool with coarse cutting sanding drum. Small Stump cutter, Number 10 pointed diamond bit. Sandpaper 100 and 220 grit. Burning Pen. I Use Razertip, Band Saw.

Next square a line across the end and trace the top and side views of the pattern on the wood. | BAND SAW |
![]() |
This is what your redpoll will look like,
when he is sawed from the block
|

I've marked the wood to cut off, next draw the shape of the head. It is ( 1" ) at the widest point. | HOLD IT IN THE VICE CUT OFF EXCESS WOOD WITH HAND SAW |
![]() |
Leave the head flat on top and cut out the sides of the head to the widest part. | SHAPE THE SIDES OF THE HEAD USING THE COARSE SANDING DRUM |
![]() |
At this point , draw center lines on the sides and the top and bottom of the bird. It is important to keep these lines on the carving . If they get rubbed out, put them on again
![]() |
Next step is to round the carving, start on the bottom, making sure each side is the same. | COARSE SANDING DRUM |
![]() |
Round the top of the back, only as far
back as the beginning of the primaries. Next , thin the tail , mark a
centerline on the side of the tail, starting in the middle of the body. I
have slanted the tail in this photo. this isn't necessary, if you want to do
it straight.

Center line on top of the head, be careful to do this correctly as it will determine the equal proportions of the redpoll head. | SANDING DRUM |
![]() |
Mark out the head profile, and the profile of the bird. Your reference should be your guide . | S |
![]() |
This shows the profile cut out, and the eye channel marked out, half way down the head. Again check your reference | SANDING DRUM |
![]() |
Cut the eye channel with your sanding drum.
![]() |
Pencil in the cheek line and carve out with the stump cutter. Make sure of the width of the cheek at this point. Cut the cheek line in about an 1/8" after you have the right width on the cheek. | USE YOUR STUMP CUTTER FOR THESE OPERATIONS . |
![]() |
Pencil in the shoulder of the wing , then pencil in the primary feather line to meet the shoulder. Check your reference for the position of the wing, and make sure it is the same on the opposite side. Spend some time checking this. Measure from center line | STUMP CUTTER |
![]() |
Carve in 1/8 " depression on the breast. Carve in three grooves under the rump. One in the center and one on each side. these grooves will meet the side pocket feathers | STUMP CUTTER |
![]() |
Pencil in the shoulder coverts tertials and primary feathers And Relieve the Mantle with an 1/8" cut at this time. Use your stump cutter for this. Refer to the pattern for measurements | DIAMOND BALL CUTTER |
![]() |
This shows the mantle relieved Round off the edges of the groove you have cut. don't flatten it. At this point you should set your eyes , I use Kulis Karvit. round the eye socket edges. Set the eyes so they tip slightly forward. Make sure that the eyes are straight with each other. Look front and top view to make sure their equal. Check and recheck. You can ruin your carving with an error here.
![]() |
At this point take your stump cutter and relieve the wing feathers Relieve the wing feathers as groups at first
![]() |
Sand smooth with 220 grit sandpaper Round off the edges leaving no cuts or sharp edges. Be diligent about this as it will affect your finished carving a great deal.
![]() |
Use your diamond bit to relieve the feather groups Drawing in carefully all the feathers in each group | DON'T CUT SHARP EDGES OF ANY OF THE FEATHERS EXCEPT THE SECONDARY, PRIMARY AND TAIL FEATHERS. |
![]() |
Follow the pattern that I have supplied. It shows each feather , the size and shape. take your time with this and pay strict attention to the feather flow. Take your stump cutter and cut a small groove from the bill up the center of the forehead. It adds character. | AFTER YOU DRAW IN YOUR BREAST FEATHERS RELIEVE SOME OF THEM WITH THE BALL AND SMOOTH OUT THE EDGES, DON'T LEAVE A GROOVE. MAKE THE TRANSITION GRADUAL NEXT AFTER RELIEVING THE BREAST FEATHERS , I LIKE TO TAKE THE WHITE STONE AND STONE THEM. (ONLY ON THE BREAST) THEN I BURN OVER THE STONING. THIS WILL GIVE A MORE NATURAL LOOK TO THE BREAST. |
![]() |
This shows the tail penciled in and ready to have the feathers carved in. Again refer to the pattern I have supplied. Make sure your tail is sanded smooth, and finished on the edges before carving out the feathers. Pay attention to the under tail coverts.
